Uptake and Translocation of Substituted Aniline Herbicides in Peanut Seedlings1

M. L. Ketchersid, T. E. Boswell and M. G. Merkle2

Acropetal and basipetal movement of trifluralin was observed in peanut seedlings. Absorption of trifluralin was greater when seedlings were germinated in untreated soil and transplanted into treated soil than when germinated in treated soil. Translocation decreased as the age of the seedling increased. Basipetal movement of trifluralin was greater than that of benefin or nitralin. Trifluralin accumulated in the cotyledons of the seedling rather than in the growing points. Herbicidal concentrations were determined with a gas chromatograph equipped with an electron-capture detector.

Key Words: Herbicide • Translocation • Chromatography • Peanuts • Seedlings
