Crude Protein Content of Eleven Grasses as Affected by Yearly Variation, Legume Association, and Fertilization1

A study in western South Dakota was used to examine the influence of legume association and nitrogen fertilization on the crude protein content of 11 grasses when grown on heavy clay soils. Treatments, arranged in a factorial field plot design, consisted of grasses grown in pure stands with and without nitrogen fertlization and of the same grasses grown with alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). Grasses in anthesis were harvested from the 33 treatments for 2 years and analyzed for crude protein content. Seasonal effects, nitrogen sources, and differences in kinds of grasses were highly significant in affecting the crude protein content of the forage. Grasses generally maintained the same relative rank within nitrogen sources and seasons.
