Effect of Varying Levels of Soil and Fertilizer Phosphorus and Soil Temperature on the Growth and Nutrient Content of Bromegrass and Reed Canarygrass1

Bromegrass and reed canarygrass responded differently to soil temperature, available soil P, and phosphatic fertilizer when grown in a growth chamber. Bromegrass yielded less titan reed canarygrass but contained more N and P in the forage. The difference in P content was greatest on soils with medium levels of P and was very small on soils with either high or low levels of P. The yield of reed canarygrass was reduced more by lower temperature tlhan the yield of bromegrass. The study was conducted at three soil temperatures, on three soils differing in levels of available P and applications of four rates of phosphatic fertilizer.
