Atrazine and the Nitrate Content of Corn1

J. D. Doll and W. F. Meggitt2

Corn treated with atrazine and grown in controlled environment chambers and in the field was analyzed for its nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) content. An increase in the NO3-N was induced by atrazine at low temperatures in controlled environment chambers. In the field corn was planted at an early (May 10) and a late (June 17) date to expose field grown plants to two temperature regimes. The only atrazine induced NO3-N increases occurred during the early months in the corn planted on May 10. At the silage stage, no significant atrazine induced NO3-N increase was found in either the late or early planted corn.

These studies indicate that any NO3-N increase in corn induced by atrazine occurs only at low temperatures and that there is no accumulation of nitrate at the silage stages in corn treated with herbicidal rates of atrazine.

Key Words: nitrogen • simazine • nitrate poisoning
