The performance of two short-stature grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L) Moench) hybrids at two row spacings and four within-row plant populations was evaluated at Ames, Iowa, in 1965 and 1966. Mean grain yield for both hybrids over all within-row plant populations showed an 11% advantage for 76-cm (30-inch) over 102-cm (40-inch) row spacings. A within-row population of five plants/30-5 cm (1 foot) produced highest grain yields at each row spacing. With each row spacing, seeds/head and heads/plant decreased progressively as the within-row plant population increased from four through eight plants/30.5 cm. Days to mid-bloom, plant height, and 100-seed weight were not altered appreciably as row spacings and within-row plant populations were varied. Interactions among the treatments did not identify differential performance patterns of marked practical consequence, and the interactions most often did not meet the tests for significance.
