A simplified technique to evaluate in vitro foam-producing capabilities of forage plants is described. The method was successfully used to examine 100 unselected clones of Vernal alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). Sufficient variation was observed to believe the technique may be useful in selecting and breeding cultivars with low foam producing capabilities and possibly low bloat probability of grazing ruminants.
