Synopsis: A philosophical consideration is given of the limits of crop purity and the related subjects of meiosis, off-types, seed standards, and seed stocks maintenance in the small grains. A major distinction is made between off-types associated with (1) system (plant) fallibilities, and (2) procedural (human) fallibilities. The implications to small grain breeding are discussed.
