Relation of Cotton Leaf Area Index to Plant Growth and Fruiting1

D. A. Ashley, B. D. Doss and O. L. Bennett2

Synopsis: LAI reached 1.0 approximately 6 to 8 weeks after emergence. It increased rapidly from 1.0 to 5.0 during the ensuing 6-week period. The relationships between LAI and plant fruiting indicate that formation of new fruit was dependent on concurrent vegetative growth until LAI reached 5.0. Yields of seed cotton increased with an increase in size of plants in early season.
