Growth of Ryegrass as Influenced by Temperature and Solar Radiation1

Ralph M. Weihing2

Synopsis: Simple correlation was 0.84 between growth and daily mean temperature within the range of 47° to 67° F. It was 0.74 between growth and daily mean solar radiation within the range of 214 and 491 langleys. Several multiple regressions of growth on various expressions of temperature and solar radiation were studied. The equation Y = –495.72 + 17.0285x1 – 0.1306x2, where X1 = temperature and x2 = temperature2, appeared best suited for predicting growth rates of forage in ryegrass pastures.

1 Cooperative investigations of the Crops Research Division, ARS, USDA, the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, and the Rice-Pasture Experiment Station, Beaumont, Texas. The author wishes to acknowledge helpful suggestions of D. E. McCloud, and the suggestions and assistance of John D. Williams, Data Processing Center, Texas A&M University, in processing these data.
