Synopsis: Carrot roots were active to a depth of 30 inches and showed deeper rooting in a loam than in a muck. Between blossom and harvest snap bean roots developed at a rapid rate and primarily downward. About 80% of the actively absorbing roots of onion and pepper were in the upper 8 inches of soil. On Carlisle muck there was little difference in P uptake by potatoes at applications of 2 to 16 pounds P per acre.
