Synopsis: Yield reductions from early harvest of first-cutting alfalfa generally were compensated for by increased yields of dry matter of the second cutting. The decrease in percent crude protein and increase in percent crude fiber with advanced maturity of alfalfa were more pronounced in first cutting forage than in the second cutting. Feeding trials with rabbits effectively demonstrated a decrease in the nutritive value of alfalfa with increase in maturity of the first cutting.
