Field Plot Technique Studies with Flue-Cured Tobacco. I. Optimum Plot Size and Shape1

Julian W. Crews, Guy L. Jones and D. D. Mason2

Synopsis: Optimum plot size was estimated from Smith's soil heterogeneity index and relative cost of experimental procedures. Estimates of optimum size of unguarded plots for measuring yield ranged from 19 to 39 plants when data from individual locations and years were considered separately. However, considering all trials for both size and shape, plots 1 row wide (3.5 feet) by 49.5 feet long (27 plants spaced 22 inches) were optimum.

1 Contribution from the Department of Crop Science and Experimental Statistics, North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station, Raleigh, North Carolina. Published with the approval of the Director of Research as Paper NO. 1484 of the Journal Series.

2 Formerly Graduate Assistant in Crop Science (now Assistant Professor of Agronomy, Virginia Polytechnic Institute), Professor of Crop Science, and Professor of Experimental Statistics, respectively, North Carolina State College.
