Synopsis: The net assimilation rate of corn was linear to leaf area index when this was less than 2.7 but declined rapidly when it was above that value. In a stand with a leaf area index of 3.3, dry matter produced per square meter of leaf area from grain initiation to maturity by the top, middle, and bottom leaves was of the ratio 4:2.2:1.
