Wear Resistance of Cool Season Turfgrasses. Effects of Previous Mowing Practices1

Victor B. Youngner2

Synopsis: Studies using an "accelerated wear" machine showed significant differences in wear resistance among several grass mixtures. One-half-inch mowing for 3 years prior to the tests was found to reduce wear resistance compared to mowing at 2 inches. Restricted grass development under close mowing is suggested as a possible cause of the reduced wear resistance.
