Influence of Environment on the Vegetative Growth of Plants Watered at Various Soil Moisture Suctions1

J. Letey and G. B. Blank2

Synopsis: At high suctions there was greater reduction in vegetative plant growth when the environment caused high evapotranspiration than when the evapotranspiration was low. Transpiration diminished as soil moisture suction increased, regardless of environment, but, under conditions of high evapotranspiration, the reduction in transpiration was relatively greater. Regardless of environment, less water was used per unit dry weight produced when watering was delayed until higher suctions.

1 Contribution from the Department of Irrigation and Soil Science, University of California, Los Angeles.
