Effect of Cultural Treatments on the Yield and Protein Content of Oats Cut for Silage1

J. W. Pendleton and C. M. Brown2

Synopsis: Spring oat forage yields were favored by an early seeding date, heavy seeding rate, nitrogen application, and the growing of a medium or late maturing variety. When plants were harvested at the early dough stage, the leaves contained 37% of the total protein; the stems, 21%, and the grain, 42%.
