Grain Sorghum Caryopsis Development. I. Changes in Dry Weight, Moisture Percentage, and Viability1

Synopsis: In Combine Kafir-60 grain sorghum, maximum dry weight accumulation was found 45 days after pollination with 23% moisture in 1958 and at 33 days with 30% moisture in 1959. Emergence in soil in the greenhouse exceeded 90% from seed 18 days old and older in 1958, and 86% from 33-day and older seed in 1959. Significant decreases in seedling vigor were obtained from seed harvested at 21 and 18 days, respectively, in 1958 and 1959. Significant correlations were noted between seed and seeding weights, and between seed weight and percentage emergence.
