Relative Magnitude of Evaporation and Transpiration1

Synopsis: Soil evaporation accounted for as much as 50% of total water use where the soil surface was frequently wet from summer rains. In row crops, sufficient energy reaches the ground surface to account for the observed soil water evaporation. Transpiration varied in only a minor way with soil water supply.
