The Inheritance of Cold Resistance and Its Relation to Fall Growth in F2 and BC1 Generations of Alfalfa1

Russell J. Kohel and R. L. Davis2

Synopsis: The data indicated partial dominance of gene action conditioning cold susceptibility in Canadian Variegated, Du Puits, and African alfalfas, and, using a model for tetrasomic inheritance, 17% of the variation associated with fall growth was attributed to additive gene action.

1 Contribution from Department of Agronomy, Purdue University Agricultural Experiment Station. Journal Paper No. 1471. Part of a thesis submitted by the senior author in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree. Supported in part by a XR Grant, Purdue Research Foundation.

2 Formerly Graduate Assistant (now Geneticist, ARS, USDA) and Professor of Agronomy, respectively.

Received for publication August 12, 1959.
