Water-Use Efficiency of Corn, Wheat, and Meadow Crops1

F. R. Dreibelbis and L. L. Harrold2

Synopsis: Water-use efficiency for corn, wheat, and meadow crops varied considerably from year to year and was not coincident with either the highest or lowest amounts of rainfall for the growing season. Slightly higher efficiencies were obtained on the Muskingum silt loam than on Keene. Irrigation on corn in 1953 and on meadow in 1955 resulted in higher water-use efficiency for these crops than occurred in any year when the crops were not irrigated.

1 Contribution from the Soil and Water Conservation Research Division, ARS, USDA, Coshocton, Ohio, in cooperation with the Ohio Agr. Exp. Sta., Wooster.

2 Soil Scientist and Project Supervisor, respectively. Grateful acknowledgment is made to Wm. W. Bentz and Robert E. Youker, for valuable assistance in compiling the lysimeter records, and to James L. McGuinness, analytical statistician, for valuable suggestions given.

Received for publication January 6, 1957.
