Megasporogenesis, Embryo Sac Development and Embryogenesis in Dallisgrass, Paspalum Dilatatum, Poir1

E. C. Bashaw and E. C. Holt2

Synopsis: A yellow-anthered Dallisgrass biotype introduced from Uruguay has normal female development and apparently reproduces sexually. Common Dallisgrass reproduces apomictically. The occurrence of nucellar embryo sacs, autonomous embryo development and the necessity of pollination for endosperm development indicate apospory and pseudogamy. Combined evidence from cytological and breeding behavior observations suggests obligate apomixis.
