Evaluation of Timothy Clones for Stem Rust Reaction1

E. L. Nielsen and J. G. Dickson2

Synopsis: Two inoculations, one made during vegetative growth and the other at or immediately following heading, were necessary to eliminate stem rust susceptible plants of timothy. A single reading, made approximately three weeks following inoculation, may be sufficient for screening plants beyond seedling stages.

1 Results of co-operative work of the Crops Research Division, Agr. Res. Service, U. S. Dept. Agr. and the Wisconsin Agricultural Experiment Station, Madison.

2 Research Agronomist, Crops Research Division, ARS, USDA and Associate Professor of Agronomy, Wisconsin Agr. Exp. Sta., and Professor of Plant Pathology, Wisconsin Agr. Exp. Sta., respectively. The writers acknowledge the help of the Numerical Analysis Laboratory, J. H. Torrie, M. R. Hanna and K. H. Mac-Kay, University of Wisconsin, for assistance in calculation of the statistics.
