The Influence of Oat Stubble Management on the Establishment of Alfalfa and Red Clover1

L. J. Klebesadel and Dale Smith2

Synopsis: Establishment was improved by clipping stubble close to the soil surface in late July after grain harvest, especially where the oats had been sprayed to control weeds. Clipping benefited red clover more than alfalfa. Clipping in late August was usually beneficial when moisture was abundant but was harmful under low-moisture conditions. Raking after clipping was beneficial to alfalfa but was usually detrimental to red clover except after August clipping when moisture was abundant.
