Residual Effect of Irrigation on Soil Physical Properties and on Runoff1

G. D. Brill and G. R. Blake2

Synopsis: Seven years of irrigation of sweet corn grown continuously and in rotation resulted in increased bulk density and lowered aggregate stability of soil and in increased runoff of rainfall. These effects persisted over winter after cessation of water application and were measureable prior to the first irrigation the following season even though as much as 36 inches of rainfall intervened.
