Synopsis: The relative soil moisture removal of alfalfa and orchardgrass was studied over a period of 2 years. During periods when these species produced equal amounts of growth, moisture in the 0- to 12-inch soil layer was depleted at approximately the same rate by both species. On 36% of the days during the growing period in the dryer year the soil moisture level under alfalfa reached the wilting percentage to a depth of 30 inches.
