Genetic Recombinations in a Hybrid Involving Three Species of Gossypium1

Charles F. Lewis2

Sypnosis: The F2 and F1 progenies of Gossypium arboretum-thurberi-hirsutum were extremely variable in plant habit, seed cotton production, and all lint properties. There is an opportunity to develop from this material new combinations of lint length, strength, and fineness which should be stabilized into relatively true breeding stocks and later used in a breeding program to improve the quality of cotton.

1 Contribution from the Department of Agronomy, Cotton Investigations Section, Texas Agr. Exp. Sta., College Station, Texas, (Technical Article No. 1649) and Field Crops Research Branch, A.R.S., U.S.D.A. Part of the work was done under Regional Cotton Genetics Project S-1.

2 Professor, Department of Agronomy and Agent, U.S.D.A. The paper reports part of the research given in a dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of California, Davis, California, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree.

Received for publication February 23, 1956.
