Synopsis: The recent expansion of winter oats has resulted from the development of more disease resistance in the South and more hardiness for northern varieties. Hardiness has been combined with disease resistance. With increased winter resistance oat hardiness nurseries have been shifted northward. Survivals of 39 of 70 entries tested from 1952–56 exceeded Winter Turf, considered the most hardy variety 30 years ago. New York Selection equalled Wintok in hardiness. Cimarron is the first hardy, upright growing oat suitable for pasture yet found. Some new winter oats carry genes for hardiness derived from spring varieties.
