Cotton Pollen Dispersal by Insects1

D. M. Simpson and E. N. Duncan2

Synopsis: Natural crossing averaged 47% at all sampling points in Tennessee experiments. A rapid loss and dilution of original pollen load was noted as the radius of insect activity increased. The pattern of distribution was found to be determined by the insect's foraging habits, rendering cotton a more effective barrier crop than equivalent areas of non-cotton.

1 Contribution from Field Crops Research Branch, A.R.S., U.S.D.A., and the Tennessee Agr. Exp. Sta., Knoxville, Tenn. cooperating.

2 Agronomist and Biological Science Aid, respectively.
