Time and Depth Patterns of Water Use by Corn1

M. B. Russell and R. E. Danielson2

Synopsis: Corn utilized water to a depth of 5 feet or more in a deep Brunizem soil. In each of three widely different moisture regimes, total water disappearance was proportional to corn yield. Rainfall and irrigation affected the soil moisture profile to a depth of only 2 feet on both corn and fallow plots.

1 Contribution of the Department of Agronomy, Illinois Agr. Exp. Sta.

2 Head, Department of Agronomy, and Graduate Assistant in Agronomy (now Assistant Agronomist, Colorado A. and M. College).

Received for publication December 8, 1955.
