Seedling Competition in Compounding Forage Seed Mixtures1

R. E. Blaser, W. L. Griffeth and T. H. Taylor2

Synopsis: Virginia studies show that seed ratio in mixtures of species should differ with spring and summer seedings. Summer alfalfa seedlings developed faster than spring, but stands were similar. Spring seeding of red clover had faster growth and better stands than summer. Orchardgrass weights and stands were similar for both dates, but yields were higher from spring than from summer seedings. Red clover suppressed spring alfalfa and orchardgrass seedings.
